# What is BMI?

Body Mass Index is a calculation based on your height in metres and weight in kilograms that is used to determine if your weight is healthy. Your BMI will be calculated as a number which represents your height to weight ratio. BMIs are shown in ranges as follows:

- An ideal BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9
- Between 25 and 29.9 you are considered overweight
- Between 30 and 39.9 you are considered to be in the obese range As well as measuring your BMI, healthcare professionals may take other factors into account to assess if you are a healthy weight.
